What HEPA filtration actually is

HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. The US equivalent sets the bar at 99.97%. That "most penetrating particle size" detail is the part people miss. A HEPA filter is not weakest at the smallest particles and strongest at the largest. It is actually least efficient at around 0.3 microns and gets better in both directions from there, which sounds counterintuitive until you look at the physics.

Larger particles, the visible grit and hair, get caught by simple impaction and interception. They are too big and too heavy to weave through the filter media, so they slam into the fibres and stick. Very small particles, below about 0.1 microns, move erratically through the air in what is called Brownian motion, bouncing off gas molecules. That random jittering means they too keep colliding with fibres and getting trapped. The awkward middle ground, that 0.3 micron band, is small enough to avoid easy interception but large enough to travel in a fairly straight line. That is why the standard is written around it. The practical upshot: a true HEPA filter pulls dust mite allergen, mould spores, pollen fragments, fine mineral dust, bacteria and a large share of respiratory droplet residue out of the airstream before the machine exhausts. That is the whole point of using it in a building full of people rather than a warehouse full of pallets.

True HEPA versus the words on the box

Here is where buyers get stung. "HEPA-type", "HEPA-style", "99% HEPA" and "HEPA-like" are all marketing phrases with no legal weight. A filter can carry any of them and capture as little as 85% of fine particles, or leak badly around a poorly sealed frame. We have opened machines on client sites that were sold as HEPA and found a loose filter cartridge with a two-millimetre gap around the edge. Air takes the path of least resistance, so most of it went round the filter rather than through it. The dust count in that office was no better than an unfiltered vacuum.

A genuinely filtered clean depends on three things being right at once. The filter itself has to meet EN 1822 or the equivalent, ideally H13 grade or better. The machine has to be a sealed system, so that every scrap of air that enters is forced through the filter with nowhere to bypass it. And the filter has to be seated and maintained correctly, because a perfect filter in a leaking housing is theatre.
