Why We Use Microfibre Cloths for Commercial Cleaning
Ask any cleaner who has been on the tools for more than a season and they will tell you the same thing: the humble microfibre cloth changed the job more than any spray, machine or gadget that came along in the last two decades. We switched our teams across to microfibre years ago, and we would not go back to cotton rags or paper for love nor money. This is the plain-English explanation of what microfibre actually is, why it cleans better, how we run a colour-coded system across dozens of Gloucestershire sites, and the mistakes that quietly ruin cloths and leave surfaces dirtier than before.
What microfibre actually is (and why the size matters)
Microfibre is a man-made fabric, usually a blend of polyester and polyamide (nylon). The polyester gives it structure and scrubbing power; the polyamide is more absorbent and helps it hold water and grease. What makes it work is how fine the strands are. A single microfibre filament is roughly one hundred times thinner than a human hair, and a good-quality cloth packs somewhere in the region of two hundred thousand of those filaments into every square inch.
Here is the part people miss. During manufacture the fibres are split into wedge-shaped strands, so each thread has a star-shaped cross-section rather than a smooth round one. Those sharp edges and the tiny gaps between them do two jobs at once. The edges scrape microscopic grime off the surface, and the gaps grab it and hold it by capillary action rather than smearing it around. A cotton fibre, by comparison, is a smooth tube. It pushes dirt and moisture in front of it like a snowplough, which is exactly why a cotton rag leaves that faint greasy film on glass and stainless steel.
The other trick is a mild static charge. As the cloth moves across a dry surface it builds up a small electrostatic attraction that pulls dust and fine particles towards it instead of flicking them into the air. On a reception desk or a boardroom table that means the dust ends up in the cloth, not resettling ten minutes after you have walked out of the room.
Why we cleaned better the day we switched
The claims around microfibre can sound like marketing, so let us be specific about what genuinely changes on site.
- It lifts bacteria, not just visible dirt. Because the fibres physically trap material in those tiny channels, a damp microfibre cloth removes a large proportion of the bacteria on a surface through mechanical action alone. That is not the same as disinfecting, but it means the surface is far cleaner before any product goes anywhere near it.
- It cuts chemical use hard. For everyday wiping of desks, sills, doors and glass, a microfibre cloth dampened with plain water does the job that used to need a spray bottle. Less chemical means lower cost, fewer fumes in a room, and less residue building up on surfaces to attract the next layer of dust.
- It holds far more water. A quality microfibre cloth absorbs up to seven or eight times its own weight in liquid. On a spill or a wet worktop that means one cloth does the work of a fistful of paper towels, and it leaves the surface dry rather than damp.
- It is streak-free on glass and steel. No lint, no smear. On a car showroom glass frontage or a bank of stainless kitchen surfaces, that is the difference between a finish that looks cleaned and one that looks polished.
None of this is magic. It is just that a smarter fabric removes soil more completely, so the surface stays cleaner for longer between visits. Colour coding: the system that stops cross-contamination
A microfibre cloth is only as hygienic as the system behind it. Use the same cloth on a toilet seat and then a kitchen worktop and you have simply moved the bacteria to where people make their tea. - Red for toilets, urinals and washroom floors — the highest-risk areas.

The colours only work if the cloths never cross over, so we do not rinse a cloth in a bucket and carry on. Once a cloth is soiled it goes into a bag for laundering, and a fresh one comes out. On a typical office we might get through fifteen to twenty cloths in a single clean. That sounds wasteful until you remember the alternative is one grubby rag being dragged around every room in the building. Wet, damp or dry: matching the cloth to the job
One reason people are disappointed by microfibre is that they use it wrong. The fabric behaves very differently depending on how much moisture is in it, and knowing which state to use is most of the skill.
Dry is for dusting and for picking up loose particles. A dry microfibre cloth run across a monitor, a shelf or a skirting board holds the dust with that static charge we mentioned. Use it dry on a screen and you avoid the moisture that can creep into the edges of a display.
Damp is the workhorse state for everyday wiping. Lightly misted or wrung out until it is barely wet, the cloth grabs grease, fingerprints and light soiling off desks, glass, doors and stainless steel. Damp is where microfibre earns its keep and where you can most often skip the chemical entirely.
Wet is for spills, heavy soiling and anywhere you are applying a sanitiser or disinfectant and want to leave it in contact with the surface. When we are running a deep cleaning visit we lean on wetter cloths and dedicated products, because the point of a deep clean is to shift built-up grime the regular routine does not touch.
A practical tip we teach every new starter: fold the cloth into quarters rather than screwing it into a ball. A folded cloth gives you eight clean faces to work through before it needs changing, so you are never wiping a surface with the dirty side you just used on the last one.
Looking after them so they keep working
Microfibre is only cost-effective if you launder it properly, and this is where most cloths die young. Treated well, a good cloth survives hundreds of washes. Treated badly, it is a lint-shedding rag within a month.
- Never use fabric softener. Softener coats the fibres in a waxy film that clogs those tiny channels and kills the grabbing action stone dead. A cloth that has been softened once feels lovely and cleans terribly.
- Wash microfibre separately. The fibres are magnets for lint from cotton towels and mop heads. Wash them in their own load and they stay clean and effective.
- Keep the temperature sensible. Around sixty degrees is the sweet spot for most cloths — hot enough to shift grease and knock back bacteria, not so hot that it melts the synthetic fibres. Very high heat, in the wash or the dryer, permanently damages them.
- Skip the hottest dryer setting. A low tumble or a line dry is kinder. High dryer heat is one of the fastest ways to ruin a batch.
- Retire them honestly. When a cloth stops grabbing and starts sliding, it is done. We downgrade worn cloths to rough outdoor and bin-store jobs rather than pretending they still clean a boardroom table.
